Younger generations are caring for the planet more. Base Genesis, being an initiative of a third-generation business owner, wanted to offer this new product as an innovative sustainable solution, yet upholding traditions and culture. Hence, we took the initiative to introduce Eco Hell Note with a limited print run to test market sentiments. We have seen that it is well-received, and are prepared to scale up production.

What is the cost?

We are still working out the cost as we scale up our production efforts.

The note looks like it burns very quickly. Will I be burned if I do not let go quickly enough?

We suggest for the note to be placed in safe spaces such as approved burners so it can burn safely and without disruption to others. Safety is always at the heart of Base Genesis, we do encourage users to practise burning safety precautions.

Do I need a safety permit to burn the Eco Hell Note?

You do not need a safety permit to burn the Eco Hell Note. However, please only burn the note in designated areas and burners to practise responsible joss paper burning.

Is the Eco Hell Note greenwashing or a gimmick?

During a time like the Hungry Ghost Festival, where the burning of joss paper is at an all-time high, statistics have shown that harmful particles like PM 2.5 are increased up to 60% as compared to an average day, also causing an increase in respiratory and asthmatic health problems.

We believe that the introduction of the Eco Hell Note can help to reduce and solve these problems as this new innovative solution leaves minimal traces of ashes and smoke behind.

As an alternative joss paper product with the highest possible denomination of money that can represent stacks of hell notes, the Eco Hell Note was created with the aim of encouraging less burning of joss paper. We believe this is a potential new approach of continuing the centuries old cultural custom that might appeal to new generations.

What expertise did MullenLowe as an advertising agency bring to product development?

MullenLowe Singapore led the design and development of the product, including sourcing the materials and planning production of the Eco Hell Note. Both organisations are delighted to help deliver this new twist on the hell note, reimagining a traditional cultural artifact that has been part of Chinese culture for centuries.

Did BaseGen seek any spiritual consultation/permission on the launch of this product?

We incorporated traditional hell note requirements in our design, for example: the Jade Emperor portrait, the seal of the Jade Emperor, and the Jade Emperor palace at the back of the Eco Note. These are the standard requirements in the design of every hell note that is approved for use. The design was improved for a more modern take without neglecting traditional aspects of hell note design.

We also went to a renowned temple in Singapore and underwent a prayer ceremony to get blessings for our project and the hell note design. There were no objections to the designs by the deities.
